Scope of work

Our past offerings have included:

  • Empathy Salons to provide a space and time for people at all levels of NVC experience to come together, practice empathic communication, and have fun.
  • Publishing materials for change agents, including the booklet, “Simple Practices for Complex Times,” which has been translated into Japanese and used in disaster relief efforts in Japan.
  • Workshops on mediation and facilitation.
  • Mediation and faciltiation services for couples, community groups, and organizations.
  • Empathic presence for protestors at Bay Area events like the Tea Party Tax Day protests, the Oscar Grant demonstrations post-verdict, and Occupy.
  • “Empathy circles” in response to large-scale news events, including the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, the Japan triple disaster, the execution of Troy Davis, and the Keystone Tar Sands pipeline.
  • Events with Sacred Economics author Charles Eisenstein, in partnership with a diverse group of a dozen organizations, including Bay Localize, Transition US, Evolver, and Acterra.
  • “Spiritual Activism” workshops.
  • Trainings on “Spirituality, Empathic Communication and Social Transformation,” to over twenty artists, healers and activists, in conjunction with the Oakland Peace Center.
  • Trainings at UC Berkeley for students working in community organizations.
  • Media co-sponsorship of events with like minded practitioners and organizations.
  • A social media network through email, Facebook, and Twitter.
  • A peace-builder training series in conjunction with other Oakland-based community groups and the Oakland Mayor’s Office, and offered free empathy to people protesting in the streets on the days of the verdict and sentence of Johannes Mehserle, the BART police officer who shot and killed Oscar Grant.
  • Sacred space for the 700 attendees at Occupy for Prisoners – San Quentin Prison on February 20, 2012, in conjunction with the Occupy Oakland Nonviolent Caucus.
